What does the STI Basic Screen involve? 

Our STI Basic Screen includes a urine test for nine common STIs. It is a private and confidential procedure conducted by our healthcare professionals.

What STIs are included in the basic screen?

Our STI Basic Screen covers nine STIs which are as follows:

  • Chancroid: A sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi, resulting in painful genital ulcers and swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin.
  • Chlamydia: Common STI caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It can affect the genitals, rectum, and throat, often with no symptoms.
  • Gonorrhoea: a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, leading to genital, rectal, and throat infections.
  • Herpes simplex 1: Common viral infection causing oral herpes, characterised by cold sores or fever blisters on or around the mouth.
  • Herpes simplex 2 (HSV-2): A common sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. It primarily affects the genital area, causing recurring outbreaks of painful sores or blisters.
  • Mycoplasma: Bacteria causing urogenital infections.
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, characterised by stages and various symptoms that can affect multiple organ systems if left untreated.
  • Trichomonas vaginalis: A parasitic protozoan that causes trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) affecting the urogenital tract in both men and women.
  • Ureaplasma: A type of bacteria that can cause urogenital infections.
How many days after possible infection should I get tested for an STI?

The recommended timeframe for an STI test after potential infection varies depending on the specific infection. For the STIs tested in the STI Basic screen, you should wait 14 days following the sexual contact you are concerned about to have the test. If you have symptoms and or strongly suspect contact with an STI, book with a Wells doctor right away as they may be able to prescribe treatment without waiting for test results.

Do I need to have symptoms to take the test? 

No, the Screen is suitable for individuals with and without symptoms. Regular testing is important for everyone to ensure early detection and prevent the spread of STIs. If you have symptoms and suspect a STI, book with a Wells doctor right away as they may prescribe treatment without waiting for test results.

Is the test confidential? 

Absolutely. We understand the importance of confidentiality when it comes to sensitive health matters. Your test and results are handled with the utmost privacy and confidentiality.

What if my test results come back positive? 

If your test results indicate the presence of an STI, our team will provide guidance and discuss your next steps. We offer tailored treatment options and support to help you manage the infection effectively.

How long does receiving the blood test results take? 

We strive to deliver your results as quickly as possible. Results are typically available within a three to four working days.

Can I order specific tests not included in the standard packages?

Can I discuss my blood test results with a doctor? 

Our qualified doctors are available to provide expert advice, interpretation of results, and personalised recommendations based on your blood test findings. Your results will be reviewed by our doctors and sent to you along with written comments and advice. A results consultation with your Wells doctor is available at a discounted rate of £45 which can be booked here, please book four working days after your initial blood test appointment.

Do I need a referral from my GP to access these blood tests? 

No, you can access our private blood tests directly without a referral from your GP. However, we encourage collaboration and communication between your GP and our healthcare professionals for a comprehensive approach to your healthcare.
