Cervical Smears
All Smears are performed using liquid based cytology (LBC) within the endocervix. HPV sampling is performed with the same technique as you would expect with a routine smear test.
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is responsible for the majority of cases of cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus spread through sexual contact. The virus is also responsible for genital warts. Most people do not have any symptoms in relation to having HPV.
High risk strains of HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for over 70 % of cervical cancer. Other high risk strains which we test for a The Wells Clinic are types 6 and 11.
We provide full follow up support and advice on management of abnormal smears and HPV. HPV testing can identify woman who are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer.
There is also an option to have testing of the above 4 high risk types and a range of low risk types of HPV.
